Guide to Mattress Toppers & Mattress Pads: What's the Difference?

3 minute read

At SHEEX®, we believe that nothing can beat a replenishing night of sleep, but sometimes you might find that you need a little extra support depending on your mattress and sleep position. A high-quality mattress pad or topper may just help you get the sleep of your dreams. If you’ve always wondered what mattress pads and toppers do and how they work, read ahead to find out!

The Difference Between a Mattress Pad vs. a Mattress Topper

The mattress takes the front and center stage when it comes to bedding. But what about mattress pads and toppers? Well, they’re somewhat the unsung heroes of bedroom essentials. Both mattress pads and toppers will act as barriers between you and your mattress. Both are pretty versatile — they regulate your sleep temperature, maintain the longevity of your mattress, and protect your mattress against stains. Still, what’s the difference between them? Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Mattress Pad?

A mattress pad resembles a fitted sheet with padding filled with a down or down alternative fiber. It adds a modest layer of padding to protect your mattress and gives you extra soft support and comfort. It also keeps your mattress clean if you have the occasional accidental spill. While you can't wash your mattress, you can usually wash a mattress pad. Plus, you won't need to worry about it moving around — SHEEX Original Performance 5-Sided Mattress pads have elastic around its sides and corners to secure it onto your mattress.

What Is a Mattress Topper?

A mattress topper also goes on your bed, but it's often a few inches thicker than a mattress pad. It’s usually meant for changing how your bed supports you, whether that means making it firmer or more cushiony. It can also help prevent wear on your bed, but it may not be as effective against stains as a mattress pad, depending on its material — mattress toppers can be made from a variety of different things, from cotton to memory foam.

If you're looking for foolproof protection for your bed, consider a mattress protector, which is often considered a “cousin” to the mattress pad and topper. Without changing the feel of your mattress, the Original Performance 5-Sided Mattress Protector uses a liquid-proof membrane to keep your bed clean from allergens and dust mites. Good news for light sleepers: it won’t create any distracting bulk or noise through the night. You also won’t need to worry about heat build-up, since this mattress protector keeps liquids out while letting air flow through for ultimate breathability.

However you supplement your mattress, you can rest easy knowing that with SHEEX bedding, you can SLEEP COOL. SLEEP DRY. SLEEP COMFORTABLE™.
