From Lucy and Ricky to Ward and June, sleeping in separate beds is nothing new. However, this classic TV scenario is seeing a resurgence with couples today. In fact, according to a 2013 study from Toronto’s Ryerson University, 30 to 40 percent of couples sleep apart.

Should you be sleeping in separate beds?

Sleeping in separate beds today has very little to do with marital problems and everything to do with getting a good night’s sleep. Sleepless nights can affect productivity and overall mood and happiness. A study by the National Sleep Foundation found that more than a third of respondents admit that their partner’s disruptive sleep habits have affected the quality of their sleep. Snoring, temperature fluctuations, restless legs and tossing and turning can all impede your ability to sleep well and can be remedied by sleeping in separate beds.

Taking it a step further, a 2015 report from the U.S. National Association of Home Builders predicted that 60 percent of upscale homes would be planned with two master bedrooms in the coming years. This trend has been linked with the concept and increasing number of couples sleeping apart.

However, before you set up your own room and leave your partner in theirs, you should both have a conversation about your sleep needs and why you feel sharing a bed isn’t meeting them. Talk about sleeping in separate beds, but also discuss how to still spend time together. You might even make a compromise where you spend a certain number of nights alone and one or two together, alternating whose bed you share.

According to numerous anecdotes from Today, More.com, Huffington Post and The Globe and Mail, couples who have started sleeping in separate beds have noticed better sleep. Today's "Snooze or Loose" sleep survey found that slightly less than half of couples sleep separately in order to get enough rest to function the next day.

Sleeping apart from each other is a start but making sure your sleepwear and sheets are conducive to a great night’s sleep is equally important. Choosing SHEEX® products will help keep you cooler and allow you the opportunity to stay asleep longer throughout the night.

Whether you’ve been together for six months or sixty years, don’t suffer through another sleepless night. If it works best for you and your sleeping partner, consider sleeping in separate beds to ensure more restful, restorative sleep.
