In preparation for the upcoming panel on sleep and health, read below to find out Why Sleep Keeps You Young, Slim and Sexy. We spend a third of our lives sleeping — which, in a constantly moving world, seems like a lot of time. Many people sacrifice sleep under the pretense that they can make it up later, but skipping sleep can have serious effects on your health, including weight gain, premature aging and poor overall health.

Weight Gain

Not getting enough sleep disrupts your metabolism and hormonal balance, particularly triggering fat-producing hormones. According to Dr. Frank Lipman of Be Well, the following changes in hormones are triggered by lack of sleep:

  • Too much cortisol — which cues your body to hold on to fat
  • Too much ghrelin — which causes you to get hungry – the higher the levels, the hungrier you’ll be
  • Not enough glucagon — which is essential for fat-burning
  • Not enough leptin — which makes you feel full – come up short and you wind up eating more
  • Not enough human growth hormone (HGH) — which, when levels drop, makes your weight more likely to rise
  • Not enough adiponectin — which helps breakdown fat and promotes insulin sensitivity

Premature Aging

Sacrificing sleep can lead to many things we associate with aging — particularly, weight gain, slowed metabolism, memory issues, weakened immunity and changes in mood. You should think about sleep and health together as they go hand in hand.

Poor Overall Health

Your body needs sleep to restore itself. While you may not be active while you snooze, your body works through the night to keep itself in tip-top shape. If you don’t sleep, your body can’t do its job and your overall health will suffer. Dr. Lipman points out that sleep is important for muscle repair, balancing your brain chemistry, removing toxic waste from the brain, and promoting immune support, pain relief and memory consolidation. In order to stay slim, look younger and maintain your overall health, it’s crucial to get enough sleep. Your body needs that seven to eight hours of sleep to restore itself.
