Whether you're taking a short road trip or a long vacation, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you get better sleep on vacation this summer.

BYO Bedding and Pillow

Bring your own bedding if you know that it will help you get better sleep. Your body longs for a stable routine, and taking familiar items with you when you travel can help keep your schedule on track and make disruptions less dramatic. Sleeping with your own pillow will also give your body a sense of comfort and familiarity. If you are a frequent traveler, you might want to consider using the SHEEX® Travel Sleep•Sax, the SHEEX® Performance Travel Pillowcase + Pillow, or the SHEEX® Infinite Zen Performance Pillow. Our line of travel products is designed to help you get a more restful and restorative sleep while on the road. Bringing your own bedding can combat the effects of bed bugs. According to a 2015 report from PestWorld.org, bed bugs are consistently encountered in hotels, about 75 percent of the time.

Make Specific Reservations

In order to have a quiet, peaceful night, make specific reservations. Request a room on the second upper level, away from the lobby, main hallway and pool. All of these areas are places people gather, which means the noise levels will be higher and more disruptive. If your hotel does not have upper floors, request a room at the back as it will be quieter.

Exercise

Sneak in a last-minute workout before your flight and remember to get up and move around while in the air. This will keep your blood flowing. Once you land, schedule another quick workout. You will sleep better that night and wake up with more energy the next morning.

Unwind

Take time to unwind before you go to sleep. Put away your electronics and turn off the TV; the blue light they emit can disrupt your body's ability to produce melatonin and naturally fall asleep. Try reading a book or taking a warm bath to relax your muscles and set your brain to sleep mode.

Invest in Earplugs and Eyeshades

Hotel walls can be thin and noisy neighbors can keep you up. Investing in a good quality pair of earplugs will help block out the surrounding noises and let you get to sleep faster. A quality pair of eyeshades will also help you sleep, especially if you are traveling to a different time zone with different daylight hours than what you are used to.

A Bed That’s Just Right

Trying to sleep in a bed that’s too soft can be difficult. When you make your hotel reservations, ask for a queen or full-size bed. Requesting a smaller bed will increase your chances of getting a firmer option, and thus getting better sleep. Since there is a smaller surface area, the springs will experience less stress and retain their strength. You can also request a bed board from the hotel if you find your bed is too soft.

Drink Responsibly

In a recent survey for IndependentTraveler.com, nearly 25 percent of respondents noted that a glass of wine before bed helped ensure a good night's sleep at a hotel. Preparing a nightcap can help you sleep easier, but be careful as too much alcohol can inhibit sleep. You can also try having a cup of chamomile or other warm tea to relax your nerves and calm your mind before bed. Make sure it's a small cup though; if you drink a large mug you will have to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Keep these tips and SHEEX® in mind when you travel this summer. SHEEX® travel products are designed to help you stay cool and comfortable and get better sleep.
