January is known as the best time of year to shop for linens but why? How did these annual savings on sheets, bedding and more come to be?
The story starts at Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia. John Wanamaker was no stranger to innovations. His department store was among the first and he was a pioneer in retail marketing. He also invented The White Sale.
Many people assume it’s called a “White Sale” because the new year is often associated with the rebirth of motivation and renewal. Layering your home with clean white linens and bedding is an easy way to feel refreshed.
While we think this is a beautiful symbolic answer, the reason is actually much simpler. When Wanamaker first advertised his White Sale, linens were mostly white. And so, the name became associated with an iconic annual sale for bedding and linens! Even though the real reason was because of the color options available, or lack thereof, it’s important to find what motivates you to start fresh or to keep going. January has become synonymous with starting anew, but it’s never too late or too early to begin a journey to a healthier, happier you!
