Do you find yourself wrestling with your bedding as the seasons change? In spring and summer, you might scour the back of the linen closet searching for the perfect lightweight sheets. By fall and winter, you’re on the hunt for heavy-duty blankets to stay warm. It’s a project—especially if you have a large family.
Research shows that sleep loss is more common in the summer months. That’s due to a variety of factors, from longer days to hotter nights. If you sleep hot, summer can be especially tough. According to a Gallup poll, nearly 6 in 10 US adults say they feel too hot at least some of the time when sleeping or trying to sleep.
To sleep soundly during the summer, invest in blackout curtains and keep your bedroom cool at night. The optimal bedroom temperature is between 60–67°F, according to experts. If you can’t bring your sleeping space into this temperature range, it’s even more important to invest in cooling bedding for warm weather.
Below we explore seasonal bedding and offer tips on how to modify your bed’s “wardrobe” to promote better sleep all year round.
Bedding for Each Season
Here are some seasonal bedding suggestions that will help you sleep comfortably no matter the time of year.
Spring
As the days get longer and the weather slowly warms up, spring brings a sense of renewal, but it can also throw your sleep off track. Blooming trees and flowers can make it harder for allergy sufferers to breathe easily at night. Meanwhile, temperatures can swing wildly from morning to night, leaving you tossing and turning.
Look for breathable, moisture-wicking cooling sheets that adapt to temperature changes. Comforters for spring can include a lightweight performance coverlet or quilt to keep you warm without causing overheating. If you struggle with spring allergies, consider a hypoallergenic mattress pad to reduce sneezing and congestion as you sleep. Don’t forget a cooling pillow designed just for your sleep style.

Summer
Hot, sticky nights can seriously mess with your slumber. Longer daylight hours can delay production of melatonin (a sleep hormone), and higher humidity can make it tough to cool down at bedtime. If your room doesn’t have air conditioning, use a ceiling fan, window fan, or portable fan to help transfer heat away from your body and promote evaporative cooling. Block heat and sunlight with blackout curtains.
Bedding for the summer should be lightweight and breathable. Pair cooling sheets with a thin, temperature-regulating blanket that you can pull on and off as needed. A cooling pillow can make a huge difference in the summer months, especially for hot sleepers. Also consider a lightweight, breathable mattress protector to prevent heat from getting trapped under your body and a sleep mask for bright summer mornings.
Fall/Autumn
As temperature drops and days get shorter, your body starts craving more sleep, but finding the perfect “Goldilocks zone” can be tricky. With the wrong bedding, you might wake up in a sweat under heavy blankets or, conversely, with a chill if you’re still using summer blankets.
This is layering season. Fall and winter bedding that helps regulate your body temperature is ideal. Use breathable sheets in combination with an all-season bedspread, which you can easily top off with an extra quilt or coverlet on cold nights. It’s also a good time to swap in a warmer duvet insert if you use one. Keep things cozy but not stifling.

Winter
Cold, dry air and less daylight can make winter a tough time for sleep. While your body naturally wants more rest in the winter, it’s easy to wake up with dry skin, a stuffy nose, or just feeling too cold to fall asleep comfortably. While you may be tempted to use heavy flannel sheets, cotton traps heat and can leave you damp, even in winter.
Finding the right products and “dressing” your bed in layers is key. For your foundational layer, choose a breathable mattress pad. For the second layer, go with breathable yet cozy performance sheets. For your top layer, use an all-season comforter paired with a performance duvet cover. And if it gets very cold in your area, layer on a quilt or coverlet, or use a weighted blanket for added warmth and comfort.
Signs It’s Time to Switch Bedding
If you’re waking up uncomfortable or struggling to fall asleep, your bedding might be the culprit. Here are a few common signs it’s time to make the seasonal switch:
- You wake up hot or sweaty even with the air conditioning or fans on.
- You’re piling on extra blankets just to stay warm at night.
- You can’t seem to get comfortable no matter how you adjust your bedding.
- You’re sleeping worse even though nothing else in your routine has changed.
- Your bedding feels too heavy or too light for the current weather.
- Your sheets or blankets aren’t drying quickly, a sign they may not be moisture-wicking enough for warmer months.
Pay attention to how you’re sleeping—your comfort is the best indicator that it’s time for a bedding refresh.
